1. ABOUT

+----------+

Hey there. I'm Dark Raven, and I have made a little utility for changing item files in Fallout/Fallout 2 - Fallout Item Changer. FIC is a simple application, so I don't really know what much else to say here, just run it and see. Be sure you read "Things you should know"!!

FIC was made on Windows 98, and it's been tested on 95 too, but I don't have any testing results on other systems. If anyone can help me with that, I'll be happy to accept.

+-----------------+

2. INSTALLATION

+-----------------+

Just run FICinst.exe, choose the directory where you want to put FIC, and press Install. That's it! Then go to that directory and run FIC.exe, and start modding Fallout items.

To uninstall, press the "Remove Registry entries" button under "Options..." and then delete FIC folder from your computer.

+-----------------+

3. INSTRUCTIONS

+-----------------+

OK, many people have trouble using FIC, so here's an all-around explanation for modding Fallout items.

   Modding Fallout 2 items:

   ------------------------

   Copy

      *.pro files

   from

      FIC\items

   to

      <falloutDir>\data\proto\items.

   Copy *.msg files from

      FIC\files

   to

      <falloutDir>\data\text\english\game.

Open FIC, and set the new directory of the .msg files under Options dialog.

In the main window, where the item list is, set the directory where you copied .pro files, press "List files" and start modding (any items that you didn't edit with FIC will be deleted as you run the game, unless you set them to Read-Only)!

   Modding Fallout items:

   ----------------------

This is gonna be a little more complicated, because FIC was mainly designed for modding F2 items. OK, here goes:

First use and undat utility to extract

      *.pro files

   from

      master.dat/proto/items

   into

      <falloutDir>\data\proto\items.

   Then, extract

      pro_item.msg,

      proto.msg,

      pro_crit.msg,

      pro_misc.msg,

      stat.msg

   from

      master.dat/text/english/game

   into

      <falloutDir>\text\english\game.

   Also, extract the

      *.lst files

   from

      master.dat/art/items,

      master.dat/art/inven,

      critter.dat/art/critters

   into their respective directories.

Now, open FIC, go into Options, and set all the required directories for the files you've extracted.

In the main window, where the item list is, set the directory where you extracted .pro files, press "List files" and start modding (any items that you didn't edit with FIC will be deleted as you run the game, unless you set them to Read-Only)!

4. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

+---------------------------+

About pictures. Since version 3.2.1.0044., FIC also shows the on-ground and in-inventory pictures of the opened item, but only if they are extracted and converted. That means, you have to use an unDat utility to extract all files under art\items and art\inven in master.dat file, and then use FRM2BMB prog to convert them to .BMP format. I know this is complicated, but you don't have to do it if you don't want to, it's only needed to see the pictures. BMPs have to be in the same directories as their .lst files: items.lst for ground pictures and inven.lst for inventory pictures.

When working with ID fields, you can use UP and DOWN keys to change their values. For example, material ID. When cursor is in the field, press UP to increase the ID value and DOWN to decrease it. Whenever the ID value changes, the respective material name on the right will change as well. This way you can find the material you need by simply scanning through the

availible materials. It probably sounds complicated, but try it - it's actually very easy.

Also, FIC supports negative numbers. That means - yes, you CAN set item's weight to be -9999 pounds.

When searching for a specific item, in the availible items list, you can write the first few letters of the item name that you are searching for, and the list index will autmatically go to the first item starting with those letters (unless the "Show item names" option is unchecked).

5. Credits and Feedback

+-------------------------+

   Well, my thanx goes to:

     my dad

     ------

who lets me use his work computer. Thanx!

     ZeaLot - my best friend

     ------

who got Delphi 6 for me, as well as teaching me things that I couldn't make a shit

without. (Although I did find out how to use BlockRead and BlockWrite myself ;-))

     Kreegle (kreegle@rpgplanet.com :: http://www.duckandcover.net)

     and

     Miroslav (miroslav@nma-fallout.com :: http://www.nma-fallout.com)

     -------

for putting FIC up for download, as well as for doing a damn good job keeping up the great Fallout portals.

     Garry(?) (garry@online.sh.cn)

     ------------------

          for making FIME, first ever fallout item editor, which was my inspiration;

     Dark Raven (DRgames@go.to :: http://DRgames.has.it) - that's me ;-)

     ----------

for spending I-don't-know-how-many months programming, bug testing, bug removing, and

self-shitting; and still thinking how to make FIC better.

The feedback - simple. Anything and everything you want to say or ask - DRgames@go.to. I will reply to all e-mails.

People who helped me with development of FIC, by providing ideas, bugs, or just help:

   톈典 츈哀淳?(Igor Gudovitch) (goudovitcheg@mail.ru)

   -----------------------------

Pointed out another weapon attack mode bug, with which I finally managed to fix it

        forever.

   Ole Erik Peistorpet (o_e_peistorpet@hotmail.com)

   -------------------

Pointed out a bug with negative values, which I couldn't find at first, but I did later,

        and fixed it.

6. VERSION HISTORY
